In Grossbritanien ist heute der Tag der starken Worte zur Überwindung der Digitalen Spaltung. Premierminister Brown hat auf dem Labour-Parteitag ein Finanzierungsprogramm für sozial schwache Bürger mit Schulkindern angekündigt. Diese sollen im Rahmen eines 300 Millionen Pfund Budgets Beihilfen in Höhe von bis zu 700 Pfund erhalten, um Computer und Internetzugang zu finanzieren: Britische Geringverdiener sollen Geld für Internetanschluss bekommen.
Der konservative Bürgermeister von London, Boris Johnson, will hingegen London zu einer „wi-fi city“ ausbauen und flächendeckend WLAN anbieten. Die BBC zitiert ihn: Mayor sees London as ‚wi-fi city’.
„[But] what we need is a city where anywhere you go, you can log on, you can get on the web. „They’ve done it in other parts of the world; why on earth can’t we do it? „I think that’s the way we should be going, rather than bunging money to people, which sounds a bit like a desperate bribe by the prime minister,“ he added. „Let’s look at ways that we can improve the infrastructure in this city so that there’s wi-fi access everywhere.“
